Human editors assess each website and if approved, they place them into the specific category in the directory. Dead Link - A link to a URL that no longer exists and displays a 404 error, page not found. Deep Linking - A link to a web page other than your index page. Description - The description of a web site in a directory or search engine. Human-edited web directories usually compose a description after reviewing the site and from your suggestion during the submission process. Google often displays the meta description tag embedded in your page source code in their results to describe your page. DNS - is the acronym for Domain Name Server. Domain - is the address, or URL of a website. When a user types a URL into a web browser, a dedicated computer, known as a Domain Name Server, or DNS translates the URL into a discrete IP address which is then used to find the actual website being requested. Doorway Page - A web page designed and optimized to target one specific keyword or phrase which attracts visitors from search engines, who are then redirected to another website altogether. Also called a gateway page, they are written for search engines with the aim of achieving high rankings which provides visitors into the main site that they would normally not receive. Usually redirects are employed so the visitors never sees the doorway, regardless they are spam and if discovered or reported, the site will be penalized by the search engine. For example search results are generated by a search engine in response to a query. Error Log File - A server log file which records errors encountered. EPV - is the acronym for Earnings Per Visitor. Exit Page - is the page where a visitor exits from your website. FAQ - is the acronym for Frequently Asked Questions. Favicon - The small icon displayed in IE next to the URL in the address bar. FFA - is an abbreviation for Free For All sites that contain large lists of unrelated links to anyone and everyone, however the links they provide are basically useless. Humans do not use them and search engines have adjusted their algorithms to minimize any effect on a sites ranking. Filter Words - Words such as of, is, am, were, was, the, for, do, ETC, that search engines deem irrelevant for indexing purposes. FTP - is the acronym for File Transfer Protocol. FTP software is used to upload changes from a pc to the server where your site is hosted online. |
