Search Engine Ranking - is the ranking of a web page or website in the search engine results, for a given keyword phrase in the top 20.

Search Engine Rankings Report - A report that measures a web page or websites search engine rankings for a range of keyword phrases across the major search engines.

Search Engine Registration - Also known as search engine submission, search engine registrations refers to the method used to register a new site or web page in the search engines.

SERP - is the acronym for a search engine results page.

Search Engine Submission - A generic term used to either describe the method of registering your web site with the search engines.

Slurp - The Yahoo search crawler.

Spider or Spyder - is a program that visits and collects specific information from a web page, including the URL and indexing the keywords and text of each page it finds, which is stored in a searchable index.

Spidering - is the actual process carried out by a spider outlined above.

Splash page - is similar to a gateway page and usually contain lots of graphics or a flash animation which must be viewed before a visitor reaches the main page.

Sponsored Links - PPC text based ads appearing at very top and on the right hand side of search engine results for Google.

Stealth Script - A CGI script which switches page content depending on who or what is accessing the page.

Stemming - Word variations. For example, if I entered the query "swim", a search engine that supports stemming might return results that include "swimming" or "swims".

Stop Word - A word which is ignored in a query because the word is so commonly used that it makes no contribution to relevancy. Examples are common net words such as computer and web, and general words like get, I, me, the and you.

Submission - is an abbreviation of search engine submission as outlined above.

Traffic - refers to your web site visitors and/or the number of page views on a website.

URL - is the acronym for Uniform Resource Locator which is the address where your website or web page can be found. e.g. www.yourdomain.com or www.yourdomain.com/yourwebpage.html

Unique Visitor - refers to when a single site connects to your server in order to view your website.

WSO - is the acronym for Web Site Optimisation, more commonly known as search engine optimisation and refers to the processes employed to improve a web site's ranking in the search engines by adjusting the in-site and off-site content.
