Many search engines will penalise sites that spam. Web design elements some search engines consider to be spam include:
Invisible text (i.e. text same color as background)
Tiny text (keep font at size 10 or higher)
Excess keyword repetition in META tags
Excess keyword repetition in body text or alt image tags
Hidden links (i.e. tiny 1 or 2 pixel gif's leading to other pages or sites, too small for visitors to see)
Off-the-page content (i.e. content deliberately designed to display far off the visible page)
Doorway pages (i.e. pages with no incoming links or content, designed solely for search engine ranking)
Meta refresh tags

Your visitors and search engine spiders expect to see text on your pages. Always use visible text that is relevant to your site/page content. Most search engines cannot index graphical text so feed them keyword-rich body text and text links.

Avoid excess repetition – include your keywords logically throughout your copy, without disturbing the flow for the reader. Have plenty of descriptive text, make it easy to read, easy to navigate and easy to find. Be consistent in layout and design, have relevant, up to date content and it should be fast to load in a browser without any distractions.
