Title Tag

Title tag is a major factor in the search relevancy algorithm on some search engines. Try to stay within a limit of 100 characters. Use unique titles, with your most important search keywords in your title for each page. Content at the beginning of the tag is considered more prominent:

Consider what is most important to the reader who comes across your page in a search at say, Google or Live.com.au even if enhancing your brand image online is a consideration. Placing your company name or brand identity at the end of the tag will prove to be more than adequate.

e.g. <title>Our brand new widget - OzWidgets</title>

If your market is strictly local, say, a company operating exclusively in Melbourne, then consider adding your geo-location to your title tag and also your meta tags.

Meta Tags

Meta Tag content, is not as important as most people believe. Search engines decreased the relevancy of the meta tag content in their algorithm to improve the accuracy of their search results. That said, the Keyword and Description Meta Tags should still be considered part of your SEO process.

The meta description tag is often displayed in the search results so you should make it appealing to potential visitors and the search engines. Use keywords, but make it readable and appealing to potential visitors. Your geographic region can be the most defining word to create a phrase so remember to include it.

Form unique phrases, don't just list your keywords in any order. Make all pages different and try to select one keyword phrase that describes your web site theme and include on every single page.

Any keywords listed in your site title should be included in your Keyword Meta Tag and also your Description Meta Tag. More importantly, your keywords should be throughout your page content.

When creating your Keywords and Description, follow the same rules that are covered for creating Titles. Most search engines display the contents of the description meta tag in the search results under your Title, so make it appealing to potential visitors and spider robots by including your relevant keywords into readable text..

Should you use all your allowable space (about 200 characters) for Keyword Meta Tag content, or less? If your site is not ranking highly, and you are using a low keyword count, consider increasing it or vice versa.

Put your Keywords above any JavaScript in the <HEAD> tag. Spiders don't read JavaScript so it is less to crawl to reach them. Don't forget misspellings.

Most search engines read more than 170 characters of the Description Meta Tag, however the amount of text they display is frequently limited to 170 characters.

The Meta Keyword Tag should include include keyword variations such as plurals, regional spellings, alternative tenses, misspellings or slang & jargon. Avoid excess repetition and use keyword phrase combinations where possible (don’t dilute the relevancy by adding more words than necessary).

Meta tags by themselves are not an effective way to improve your ranking in search engines. Other factors are also essential in achieving a high ranking in the search engines.

NoFollow Tags tell search engine robots not to follow any outgoing links on the page

<meta name="robots" content="index, follow">
<meta name="robots" content="index, nofollow">

Or they tell them not to follow a specific link <a href="join.aspx" rel="nofollow">Join</a>
